On December 15th we competed in our last meet of the 2018 calendar year. Our older swimmers who competed at the Bowdoin Open (and in High School meets during the week) were a little race weary, but nonetheless our younger swimmers had some outstanding performances to cap off a great year for our team.
2018 was breakthrough year for our club's development, and this is reflected in how many team records were set in the calendar year. We set 141 team records during the year, with 71 being set in short course yards during the winter season, and 70 being set in long course meters during the summer season. The boys were led by Ian Fournier with 25 records and the girls by Cecilia Guadalupi with 24. In addition to the records, there was Gabby and Nathan scoring at YMCA Nationals and a large number of swimmers embracing the work ethic, dedication and thought process involved to make them successful.
As for Saturday's meet, Ian Fournier and Eli Burnham reset two of their team records (Ian in the 200 free with a 2:07.20 and Eli in the 100 IM with a 1:24.40). In addition, our teams development moved in a positive direction with big improvements in many of our swimmers performances. The breakout performers of the meet included:
Our 8 and under boys, Andrew Zimmerman, Mason Lamontagne, Jack Kennard and Brady Small, who all had time drops. A couple of the 8 and under girls also had significant time drops with Annabel Gavan-Soto dropping big in the backstroke and Millie Story dropping 23 seconds off of her 50 freestyle.
In the 9-10 age group Rekha Goonsekere and Lolo Dinkel both dropped their 100 IM and 50 breaststroke events, with Lolo dropping 9 seconds in the IM and Reika dropping 3.5 in the breaststroke. Emma McDowell also dropped 3.5 seconds in her 100 free. On the boys side Abe Bryant dropped almost 5 seconds in the 50 free, won his heat and sported the biggest post race smile.
In the 11-12 age group Anabelle Orth and Anna Clausen had nice time drops in the 200 free. Sera Perry followed up last meets 10 second time drop in her 50 free by dropping over 3 seconds this week. On the boys side, we had three boys take a big step forward as swimmers. Aaron Theriault, Owen Munzing and Alden Wilkinson all had big drops in multiple events.
Our 13-14 boys also stepped up this week and as a group were much improved. The two Tylers (Cahn and Foster) continue to drop time, as did Brady Gardner, Noah Katz, Bailey Willey, Jameson Russell, Nate Best, Scottie Turney and Ryan Emerson. On the girls side Sara Down and Jordan Locsin had big improvements.
Despite the meet fatigue, a couple of our senior swimmers put the 15-18 age group on the board for time drops with Maddi Curran, Eli Story and Delaney Willey throwing PB's into the effort.
It was a great way to finish off the calendar year, and a good jump start into 2019!
